I’ve been lucky enough in my 30 years to have attended more than one Irish wedding. I’ve been even luckier to have thrown one myself when the Big Man and I got married in 2009. You might have heard that Irish weddings can get a little crazy. Hear me when I say: believe the hype. An Irish wedding is like no other party on Earth.

You’ve heard the old joke, I’m sure:

What’s the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish wake?
(wait for it)
One less drunk. Ba dum dum.

But seriously, there are parties, there are weddings, and then there are Irish weddings. Irish weddings are where the ceremony is taken seriously, the whiskey flows generously, the after party is the place to be, and someone always winds up singing sad Irish sings at the end of the bar.

Everyone believes that their wedding was the best ever, but ours was really the best ever. The Big Man was in charge of working with the caterers to get the bar ready, and they didn’t believe him when he sent them the requested liquor sheet. “This is way too much booze for one wedding,” they told him.
“Just wait,” he said.
They didn’t listen to him, and subsequently we ran out of booze about three hours before the reception ended. Our (incredibly sweet, generous, hardworking) caterers ran all over town trying to buy more.

In Ireland, as most places, the wedding cake is the centerpiece to the reception.  It’s only in Ireland, however, that a traditional wedding cake is made from fruitcake.  I’ve always carried the romantic notion that that’s because fruitcakes basically never die, and neither should a good marriage.  In truth, it’s probably because a typical fruitcake is so freaking sturdy that it can survive any bout of mad wedding carry-on, but let me have my fantasy.

This week, for my series on Irish recipes over at MyIrishJeweler.com, I made an Irish wedding cake.  It’s not tough like most fruitcake, nor is this some flimsy angelfood cake.  It’s a Spiced Bourbon Wedding Cake, frosted in Hazelnut Buttercream (and draped in flowers, natch).  It’s pretty, it’s booze-laden, it’s festive.  Just like a good party.  Click the link to see the recipe!
